Plantation Shutters: the look and style that transcends generations

A shutter’s tilt rod is the mechanism that controls the movement of the louvers.

Usually placed in the center of the panel, this wooden rod allows the simultaneous movement of each attached louver.

A single tilt rod is one continuous rod that attaches all louvers from the top to the bottom of a panel. (shown on sample panels on the left)

A divider rail can be added to a panel allowing control of the upper and lower sets of louvers independently.  This application is particularly useful if you enjoy the privacy provided by the closed lower louvers but don’t want to sacrifice the natural light provided by the open upper louvers.

A split tilt rod offers the same independent control of the upper and lower louvers as the divider rail but does not include the “rail” that separates the upper and lower tiers.

A hidden tilt rod option is also available for those who prefer a more contemporary look. ( shown in picture below)  A metal tilt rod is discreetly hidden behind the panel to allow full functionality of the shutter’s louvers.

The choices available in louver sizes vary and are subject to design and desire.

The 2.5 louver is traditional for period homes. This might be suitable to retain that look or return to the look that made shutters famous.

The 3.5 louver fits the majority of today’s market and offers a pleasant choice for most decor. This size will fit most window frames and combines contemporary elegance with tradition.

The 4.5 louver allows the greatest view out with less louvers per square inch. This choice might be made for homes with large windows, tall ceilings or rooms with expansive areas. This shutter provides a look of lavish grandeur.  Additional clearance is needed to  accommodate this louver size, but with custom trim from Oklahoma Shutters, anything is possible.

Divider Rail - A  horizontal bar that creates top and bottom louver sections and allows the two sections to rotate independently.

A divider rail in a shutter unit can be extremely useful to make two, or more, louver sections within a single shutter panel. This allows the operator to open the top louver area while leaving the bottom area closed.

Divider rails are usually required  when the height of a shutter unit is greater than a specified height for stability. The specified height is generally determined by the material used to build the shutter (vinyl, faux wood, poly, wood, etc.) and style.

Optional - The customer can specify a defined location for a divider rail. This becomes beneficial when there is an existing division within the window, allowing the divider rail can be located a the same level. If the window is full glass and meets the criteria for no divider rail the customer might request an optional Tilt Bar Split . this choice allows dual control without the added material of a divider rail.
